TikTok Faces Preliminary Investigation by French Data Privacy Watchdog CNIL

France’s knowledge privateness watchdog CNIL mentioned on Tuesday that it has opened a preliminary investigation into Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok after it acquired a criticism.

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, is already beneath investigation over privateness issues by US, European Union and Dutch authorities.

“A complaint about TikTok was received in May. This complaint is now under investigation,” a CNIL spokesman mentioned, confirming a Bloomberg report.

He declined to elaborate on the character of the criticism or the identification of the complainant.

In the United States, officers have mentioned that TikTok poses a nationwide safety danger due to the non-public knowledge it handles.

President Donald Trump has threatened to ban TikTok and has given ByteDance 45 days to barter a sale of TikTok’s US operations to Microsoft.

In June, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) said it might arrange a job power to evaluate TikTok’s actions throughout the bloc after a request from an EU lawmaker involved about its knowledge assortment strategies and safety and privateness dangers.

In May, the Dutch privateness watchdog mentioned it might examine how TikTok handles the info of tens of millions of younger customers.
